Witnessing the American Century
“A powerful, needful reminder of this period in history.”—Marcus Brotherton , New York Times bestselling author of We Who Are Alive & Remain
“Captain Allen Brady has lived an extraordinary life, punctuated by his participation in history’s pivotal moments. From the shores of Pearl Harbor to the gates of the Hanoi Hilton in the Vietnam War, Witnessing the American Century is an inspiring odyssey that will leave you grateful that our country has warriors like Brady and amazed that he lived to tell his tale.”—Adam Makos , New York Times bestselling author of A Higher Call
“Capt. Allen Brady would not be the first military man tone-deaf to his own courage, but that can be forgiven a man who has always known mission. As service men and women know, without courage there is no mission. Witnessing the American Century is a fascinating, personal tour through the years that made America the world’s greatest superpower beginning with the crumbling of the old imperial order in the leadup to World War II, through the nuclearization of the US military and the numerous post–World War conflicts. A naval aviator by trade, Brady is a reliable and friendly narrator. The heart of the book is his recounting of the six years he spent as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam’s infamous Hanoi Hilton and how he and his compatriots survived torture and withstood the worst their enemy captors could inflict on them with improbable ingenuity and insurgent-like resolve. It is no exaggeration to say that the human spirit lives within these pages.”—Michael J. MacLeod, author of The Brave Ones: A Memoir of Hope, Pride, and Military Service
“Witnessing the American Century is a compelling and informative work that explores the legendary career of Capt. Allen C. Brady (USN, Ret.). It provides readers a facinating look at some of the 20th century’s most pivotal events, ranging from the rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany to the dawn of the nuclear age, as they were experienced firsthand by Captain Brady. Of particular value are his reflections as a POW with the North Vietnamese. This book is highly recommended reading for military history scholars and enthusiasts alike.”— Sean M. Heuvel , editor of The Revolutionary War Memoirs of Major General William Heath
Aprils and Decembers
To raise a child alone is the only way to understand how incredibly difficult that job is. What is a mother to do when in building a life for what was supposed to her perfect family, she gets it all wrong…when the path to happiness she hoped for and wanted for her child spins tragically off course?
Dawn Quarles is that mother, and her memoir revisits the events and circumstances that, from her own childhood and beyond, shaped her deeply complicated, often heartbreaking and magically uplifting journey through the toughest stages of every woman’s life.

“More than anything else, this book describes the evolution of a young insecure girl into an adult woman at peace with herself. She made mistakes in her life, but through it all she raised a son any mother could be proud to call her own. Grand book for many women who are seeking their way through life and having problems.”

5 out of 5 stars on Amazon “Could not put it down….”
“When artists, songwriters, speakers or authors pour their heart and soul into a piece of their work it shows. Aprils & Decembers is that kind of book. Dawn Quarles laid bare her soul for everyone to see…the beautiful and the ugly…she turned herself inside out. I was amazed at her transparency and in awe of the guts it must have taken to put those innermost thoughts and emotions to paper. There will be lessons for lots of people in Dawn’s words and I know that there will many, many women who see themselves in these pages and feel empowered by Dawn’s ability to walk through the fire and come out whole. I could identify with her as the mother of boys – the need to know that in the end we have done a good job raising them is visceral. I usually love good historical fiction, but for me, this book had everything – love, navigating through tragedy, great sex, family, faith and woman’s soul laid bare. It is a must read for anyone who has ever loved a man with all of her heart or anyone who has done her very best to raise up a boy to become a man.”

This woman has been so many struggles and has shown her commitment to her son and her resiliency through it all. She is a strong woman that others should look up to as well be proud to call her a friend. “Dawn Quarles’ story touches the depths of a mother’s heart and soul with beautifully crafted prose and stark honesty. Her memoir is a wonderful gift to those of us perpetually asking ourselves if we are screwing up our kids. She examines the human condition, where some are resilient beyond belief, and others break beneath the weight of tragedy and heartache. It reminds us to consider that everyone has a story and you can’t truly understand someone until you see them through their experiences. I laughed, cried, and cheered with her from page to page, and her book has an honored place on my mantel, in the company of Bronte, Vonnegut, Lee, and Twain.”

“This is truly a story of perseverance and will power that will leave you amazed at the strength of the woman who has lived this life. The author’s voice and prose effortlessly immerse the reader in her journey through childhood, romantic relationships, motherhood, and all the hard lessons life can present you along the way. But the truest testament to her courage is her unwavering commitment to her son and seeing this boy overcome so many losses to become a healthy and happy young man. That is the best reward a mother can have and this author deserves that and so much more.”

“Finished the book a few nights back after staying up reading until 6am. Great book full of all kinds of emotions; I cried, I worried, I felt anger, I felt your love, I felt your actions through anger were justified and at other times I actually laughed out loud! Overall it hits the heart of any mother who worries she is doing something wrong while trying to raise her child. Taking away your child’s pain is not so easy to do; especially when you are also hurt, confused and grieving as the parent. I love this book, it is captivating!”

“April and Decembers left me excited to turn each page and float through the years as if I was in the story myself. When a writer is able to reach from the depths of their pages and pull you into their storyline you know they are not just a writer, they are a gifted author.”
